The heart shaped flower
Stroll through the peaceful well well-entered backyard landscape in a Hawaii garden and you might be lucky enough to spot an Anthurium (an-THOOR-e-um). Its heart-shaped petals have a way of soothing the soul and bringing a sense of calmness and well-being. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of planting many anthuriums, and I have found that it’s truly my favorite garden to create.
In Hawaii, Anthuriums are traditionally planted under the canopy of Hapu (native Hawaiian ferns) for protection on the garden floor. It’s a delightful sight to see a lush tall draping Hapuu fern leaf hanging over some colorful Anthuriums. These magical plants fill my heart with appreciation and to pay close attention to the little things in life that take precedence in the garden.
Rain Forest Lover
Anthuriums grow best with day temperatures of 78 to 90 F and need a low precipitation misting rain overhead, bright indirect sunlight, and high humid conditions to thrive in the landscape. Anthuriums are not the easiest plant to put into the landscape but under the right conditions and careful care they become the princess of your garden. I have a special place in my heart for this heart shaped flower.
